An activity described as accessible or inclusive may still leave important questions unanswered. The venue, registration process, noise level and way instructions are given can all affect participation. Begin with the access needs that matter to you, without feeling obliged to explain your full medical history to make a logistical enquiry.

Alberta's Family Resource Network locator can help identify family programs and contacts. Once you find a possible activity, ask the organization delivering it about the specific session and venue. A network-wide description may not describe every building or format used.

Describe a function you need

Instead of asking only whether a building is accessible, ask about the route from the drop-off point to the room you will use. If steps, door widths or an elevator matter, name that requirement. Ask where an accessible washroom is in relation to the program, rather than assuming one elsewhere in the building is convenient.

For communication needs, ask how instructions and changes are shared. You may need written information, an interpreter arrangement or a way to ask questions outside a large group. Find out what the provider can offer and what needs advance notice.

Sensory needs can also be discussed concretely. Ask about typical group size, background music, the possibility of stepping out and whether a quieter space is available. A description helps you decide; it should not become a promise that every session will feel exactly the same.

Consider the whole visit

Registration itself can create a barrier. If an online form is difficult to use, ask whether there is another way to register. Confirm how you will receive a booking confirmation and a cancellation notice in a format you can access.

Discuss whether a support person, another caregiver or a sibling can attend. Their presence may change the registration requirements or the number of places needed. Do not leave this question to the person at the door on the first day.

If the program cannot meet a requirement, ask whether another session, venue or format is available. Record what has actually been confirmed. A possible adjustment is different from an agreed arrangement, and you should not have to organize transport around a vague assurance. Recheck if the venue changes, because the answer for one building may not apply to another.
